GP Appraiser

Being a GP appraiser is a challenging and rewarding role offering the opportunity to engage constructively with GP colleagues in a supportive and formative process that forms a significant element of the revalidation of GPs.

GP appraisal in Northern Ireland is delivered by over 50 GP appraisers, all of who are practicing GPs also working 1-2 sessions per week in GP appraisal. The average commitment is one appraisal session per week delivering 25 appraisals each appraisal year.

NIMDTA will be recruiting for GP appraisers in the coming months. While appraisal posts are advertised on the HSCNI jobs website (https://Jobs.hscni.net/) you can also pre-register your interest for future positions by emailing the GP appraisal team who will then contact you when the next appraiser recruitment commences.

To be eligible to become a GP appraiser you must meet a number of essential criteria. Applicants must:

  • Be committed to the GP Appraisal system in Northern Ireland and the duties and responsibilities of doctors as set out in the GMC document Good Medical Practice for GP’s (April 2013) and the Good Medical Practice Framework for appraisal and revalidation (March  2013)

  • Be on the GP Register with the GMC with a licence to practise and be on the Northern Ireland Performers list for General Practice

  • Have undertaken at least three satisfactory appraisals relating to GP roles post-CCT

  • Be currently practising an average of at least 2 sessions per week in GMS or in a traditional GP led Out-of Hours setting.

  • Have no current warnings or restrictions from the GMC or other professional bodies

Additional requirements for the position of GP appraiser include:

  • Effective time management and general organisational skills

  • The ability to write clear, succinct reports and to work effectively in a team

  • Having interpersonal skills necessary to conduct an effective, supportive peer appraisal, including listening skills and giving effective feedback

  • Good IT skills to include the use of email, Microsoft Word and “zoom”

  • The ability to identify educational needs

  • Being credible with the local medical profession
